Antimicrobial resistance means that bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond well to medicines used against them. WHO says misuse and overuse of antimicrobials are important drivers, and resistant infections can become harder to treat.

Safer everyday habits

  • Do not use leftover antibiotics or share them with another person.
  • Do not ask for antibiotics simply because you have a cold; many respiratory infections are not bacterial.
  • Use a prescribed medicine exactly as instructed and ask what to do if you miss a dose or develop a side effect.
  • Ask how to dispose of unused medicines safely.
